The Help: Truth From The Heart

Movie Review:
 The Help

“You is kind. You is smart. You is important.”

Imagine you are a worker who is oppressed most of the time by your racist boss and some of the society because they think it is “alright” to do so. As you are tired of such actions, you wanted to speak up but it will be meaningless because you don’t have the authority to do so. In the movie, the same tragedy is happening among the black people during the Civil Rights era in Jackson, Mississippi. The protagonist Eugenia "Skeeter" Phelan, a young and aspiring white journalists understands the social injustice happening among them and she wants to help them by writing a book from the perspectives of the black maid facing racism from their white family while trying to become a legitimize journalist. The Help is an entertaining movie that manages to blend humor and drama quite well.

The material reminded me of...

As the movie centers on the social injustice during the Civil Rights Era, it reminded me of the novel, To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee as the author plays with the similar theme as well. Speaking about the theme, it was a serious issue where the black people suffer the worst from it. In the movie, the white people easily insulted their maids in front of their face and even build a special toilet just for them because they fear of getting diseases from them for sharing the same toilet. This issue is an offend to the black people as they are also the same human beings with feelings like the white people do. With the brilliant story line, the movie has successfully lured the audience to feel empathy with the hardships of the black people facing racism and make them understand why social justice of the black really matters until today.

All in all, The Help is a fine movie as it has a lot of memorable scenes that will capture your heart humorously and It is a movie that will make you understand the battle of the black people especially in the Civil Rights Era.

Upon watching the movie you may have a different perspective on chocolate pie ever again...
